CRITICAL PRAISE FOR “SLEEPING AND WAKING”

“An indie that delivers….A sci-fi romantic drama that explores questions of identity, relationships, and faith, and brings you entrancingly close to the characters….‘Sleeping and Waking’ is natural storytelling at its best.”

—THE EXAMINER – DC

“Smart and articulate….In this drama, director Joe Banno avoids any pat resolution to the protagonist's existential quandary.”

—CHICAGO READER – IL

“The type of intimate human drama you’d normally discover at Sundance.  The discussions raised by ‘Sleeping’ are heavy, but the drama stays light, as director Joe Banno focuses on his lead character’s second life….Refreshingly convincing.”

—SOUTH CHARLOTTE WEEKLY – NC

“The dialogue and intimacy play out like a French drama, and the audience is asked to think….A Sundance kind of movie.  See it!”

—SOPHISTIMUNITY CAFÉ – BLOG

“A thoughtful and poignant film – a love story with a twist and a Mary Shelly-esque thriller….The director and actors deliver nakedly honest performances that will leave you to do some soul searching of your own.”

—THE TATTLER – NY

Banno has recently begun directing film and video projects. In 2009, Banno released his first independent feature-film, “Sleeping and Waking”, which had a theatrical run in indie-cinemas around the US, and has since streamed on Netflix, Google Play and YouTube Movies.

Boasting a wide-ranging knowledge of film, television and related media, he trained in NYC – in film and video production, post-production, history and semiotics – at The New School, The School of Visual Arts and Global Village Video Center.

Banno has been involved in the world of visual media in a wide range of positions – film critic, projectionist, cinema manager, co-director of live-theatre telecasts for VA cable television, and creative consultant on the festival-award-winning 1995 film, “Bigger Fish” (Second-Hand Smoke Productions).

In 2012, he completed a two-year project directing a 12-part web-series featuring nutritionist Janis Jibrin, for fitness-guru Bob Green’s website TheBestLife.com, ranging from interviews and exercise videos to cooking demos and on-site restaurant features.

As a director, screenwriter and adapter, he has several independent film and web-based projects currently in development.
